Weaving is the traditional method of making carpet, imitating manual technology. Woven carpets are often called Axminster or Wilton - these are the types of looms. The carpet weaving industry developed in Brussels, Belgium. In the 1700s, it developed in Wilton, Axminster and kiddminster, England. In 1800, the French inventor Joseph Marie jacquard designed the carpet pattern weaving mechanism, which was first used in Wilton.

In woven carpets, the entire structure of pile and backing is assembled at the same time. The fine thread extends over the width (weft) of the loom and passes through the loom (Warp). Individual clusters are cut into lengths and inserted between the weft and warp threads of the loom to form pile. Warp and weft yarns are tensioned to lock tufts in place. Unlike tufted carpet, tufted carpet is an interlayer of pile, main backing and secondary backing. Woven carpet is a front to back integral fabric.
