Using one or two needle bars that can slide back and forth horizontally and feed pile yarn of different colors into the correct needle, the color in the carpet can be converted into a simple geometric design. Figure 13.10 shows the top and back of the tufted carpet, showing the saw tooth displacement of the tufted produced by the sliding needle bar.
More complex patterns can be achieved by combining the two mechanisms (ie, by varying the yarn tension in conjunction with sideways shifts in the positions of the needles).
