The types of wool used for carpets can be divided into three categories: General purpose wools, specialty carpet wool and filler wools. They are mixed in different proportions according to the quality and type of carpet to be made.

(1) General purpose (mainstream) wool

These wool are used because they have good color, strength, easy spinning and good wear resistance. They also have the ability to carry inferior "filled" wool in the manufacturing process. Examples are New Zealand hybrid wool and secondary shearing, mainly from Romney and closely related varieties kupworth and perrendale.

These wool can be further divided into two groups - glossy wool (shiny appearance) and high bulky wool (elastic feel). The percentages of these two groups can vary according to the desired effect of the finished product. Glossy wool is usually not suitable for most types of machine-made carpets because they tend to produce low bulky (thin) yarn, and the gloss will exacerbate the inevitable changes in the appearance of the carpet when the carpet is worn on the floor.

(2)Specialty carpet wool

Wool is sought after because of its special properties in the appearance and feel of carpets. For example, Drysdale wool, very coarse Romney wool and British wool, such as Scottish black face wool. These wool tend to have higher medulla levels than general wool. The presence of medulla provides an ideal crisp feel.

The main producers of special carpet wool in Australia are Drysdale, tukidale, elliotdale and carpermaster varieties (cotton, 1991), (kajons, 1991). With the exception of elliotdale, all products are developed in New Zealand.

(3) Filler wool

These wool are often short, discolored, usually poor in style, and are used only because they are cheap. Examples of suitable New Zealand wool are lock wool, second wool, second wool, belly wool, DAG wool and dyed wool. However, the use of these cheaper wool usually depends on the style of the carpet. If light colors are required, fewer of these poor wool types must be used.
